On Principle in Astoria

On October 3, 2006, 125 Astorians and Clatsop County residents gathered at the historic Liberty Theater to hear author and Linfield College professor David S. Gutterman discuss citizenship, longing, and hope in America. The conversation continued after his presentation at a reception in the MacTavish Room.

Community members continued to meet throughout the month of October to read, think, and talk together about what the fundamental democratic principles of justice, economic opportunity, equality, and individual freedom mean today. Readings drawn from American history and literature provided a common framework for each conversation, and facilitators guided the discussions to ensure a respectful atmosphere. Reading and discussion groups were held at Clatsop Community College, the Astoria Public Library, and the Astoria Senior Center in partnership with the Job Corps at Tongue Point. KMUN aired weekly programs of readings, conversation, and music prior to each week's discussion.

On Principle in Astoria is funded by OCH through a We the People grant from the NEH, the generous support of the Bank of Astoria, the Daily Astorian, the Liberty Theater, Clatsop Community College, Astoria Public Library, Astoria Senior Center, Job Corps at Tongue Point, KMUN, the Clatsop County Historical Society, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, City of Astoria, Lewis & Clark National Historical Park, and the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce.
