On Principle in Lincoln City

On October 1, 2006, sixty-five Lincoln County residents gathered at the Driftwood Public Library to hear author and Linfield College professor David S. Gutterman discuss citizenship, longing, and hope in America. The conversation continued after his presentation at a reception hosted by the Friends of the Library. Despite the balmy and sunny day, the program also celebrated the library's return to winter hours.

Community members continued to meet at the library on the following four Tuesdays to read, think, and talk together about what the fundamental democratic principles of justice, economic opportunity, equality, and individual freedom mean today. Readings drawn from American history and literature provided a common framework for each conversation, and facilitators guided the discussions to ensure a respectful atmosphere.

On Principle in Lincoln City is funded by OCH through a We the People grant from the NEH, the generous support of private donors, and the Driftwood Public Library.
