"I hope On Principle will leave people wanting more, wanting to be able to speak with other people—that it will generate the type of enthusiasm and commitment that will help contribute to conversations." Professor David S. Gutterman
On Principle begins on Sunday, February 11, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Blue Mountain Community College's Pioneer Theatre (BMCC, Pioneer Hall, 2411 NW Carden Avenue). Author and Linfield College professor David Gutterman will discuss citizenship, longing, and hope in America. Everyone is welcome to continue the conversation over coffee and refreshments after the presentation.
The series continues in the following weeks as Pendletonians read, think, and talk together about the fundamental democratic principles of justice, economic opportunity, equality, and individual freedom. Short, accessible reading materials that illuminate the principles were drawn from American history and literature and compiled in free reading packets. The readings will serve to establish a common framework for each week's conversation, and facilitators will ensure a respectful atmosphere where everyone has a chance to participate. Reading and discussion groups are scheduled at these locations:
The free reading packets will be available after February 1 at the City of Pendleton, Blue Mountain Community College, Pendleton Center for the Arts, Heritage Station Museum, Pendleton Public Library, East Oregonian, Tamastslikt Cultural Institute, and other community locations. They will also be available at the opening program.
